Plenty of you love to make a visit or two (or three!) to the many vineyards we have in the area – we’re right in the heart of English wine country.  We especially love the fact that one of our closest vineyards is organic – and so shares some of the values we hold dear here at Swallowtail Hill.

In fact Sedlescombe Organic is England’s oldest organic vineyard and it’s around 15 minutes’ drive from our farm.

Organic wines can only be produced from certified organically grown grapes and must be produced in a certified organic winery.  What makes them special and so good for the planet is what happens to the soil and vines in the vineyard. “No chemical fertilizers, herbicides (weed-killers), or systemic fungicides (stop mildew diseases, etc) or insecticides are allowed in organic vineyards. Soils are kept healthy and fertile using composts, green manure cover crops such as clovers, etc. which also improve wild-life habitats for insects (bees and butterflies) and birds.”

Here at Swallowtail Hill we’re huge advocates for biodiversity, our conservation work ensures that we provide a thriving natural habitat for flora and fauna, so we’re a big supporter of businesses who take the care of our shared landscape seriously.

Sedlescombe Organic, which was established back in 1979, now attracts some 5,000 visitors per year to its Vineyard & Woodland Nature Trail. Its estate comprises 22 acres of organically certified vineyards – and its award winning range comprises whites, rosé, red and sparkling wines – all certified either organic or biodynamic by the Biodynamic Association UK and suitable for both vegetarians and vegans. They also produce fruit wines, juices and farmhouse ciders – so there really is something for everyone.

On site they have the Cellar Door Bar where you can drop in for a glass of wine with no booking required. If you’re feeling peckish, why not visit their on site café for a delicious local cheeseboard and a bottle to share. Last but not least, of course you can also book in for a tour of the vineyard itself which includes tastings. This costs £20 per person and you can add on a lunch or cream tea to your booking at an additional charge. Children are also welcome to join you on the tour and won’t be charged for a ticket.

You might also like to drop in just to browse the shop and pick up a bottle to enjoy at back here at Swallowtail Hill or to take home with you.  Sedlescombe Organic is open 7 days a week between 10am and 5pm.  Visit their website for more information.
