Meadow Keeper’s Cottage
Picture postcard pretty in the middle of our meadows
Sshhh, Meadow Keeper’s Cottage is all about peace and tranquility…

In fact the Swallowtail Hill story began with Meadow Keeper’s Cottage as she was the first, rather magical place we created for guests to enjoy. She’s picture postcard pretty and she sits between two wildflower meadows.
A perfectly proportioned cottage-on-wheels she can sleep a couple or a family with two young children. There’s a double bed and two seating areas that convert into (narrow) single beds at night which are just right for kids.
There’s a small table between the benches for indoor dining or playing board games. The mini kitchen has a gas hob with grill and a sink (but your water supply is outside). There’s a woodburning stove for chilly evenings and a small wardrobe for storage.
Meadow Keeper’s Cottage is the ultimate escape from it all, she has no electricity so she gives you the opportunity to take life slowly for a few days! We provide you with rechargeable lanterns for your use, and outside there’s a giant cooler box to store your food and drink.

We provide all linens and towels and ample kitchen equipment to make self catering easy.
Open your stable door and step down to your covered deck to enjoy meals outside, you have your own firepit for campfires and outdoor cooking too – BBQ equipment supplied.
Tucked to one side of the cottage is your shower and sink area – with hot and cold running water. And a few metres away discreetly across a little bridge is your compost loo.
Meadow Keeper’s Cottage has its own private pond, often frequented by Heron, and sometimes visited by Kingfishers – it’s the perfect place for bird watching. You can explore the meadows too and spot the deer who visit most mornings to graze.

Take a look at our farm map to see where you’ll be staying
One of the best features of Swallowtail Hill is just how secluded our accommodation is. You could easily hide away for a few days and not see anyone else if you don’t want to! Meadow Keeper’s Cottage is ten minutes’ walk from the barnyard and at least five minutes’ walk from the nearest accommodation. No neighbours. Just your own little corner of heaven for a few days. When we promise ‘getting away from it all’ we really mean it.
You leave your car parked in our barnyard and we drive you to your accommodation in our farm buggy and will show you how everything works and get you settled in. We collect you again on your day of departure but in between times you are free to walk around our acres as you please.

We had a glorious stay at Meadow Keeper’s Cottage. It was just what we all needed, off grid, no phones/iPads or tv, just family time in a beautiful location. It’s nestled between 2 meadows where we saw deer and heard owls overnight. The little cottage is very cute and had everything we needed. We made use of the honesty shop and had a picnic and BBQ made for us, all the products were delicious. We were gutted we couldn’t stay longer and have promised our children we shall book again for next year.

Food & Drink
For some, the chance to cook up a storm on the campfire is an essential part of their short break, for others having a hand with the self-catering is what having a restful holiday is all about. So we offer a range of breakfast boxes, bbq boxes, campfire suppers, picnics and teas that can be ordered in advance of your stay.
All of our grocery boxes contain locally sourced produce, organic where possible. Supplies in our shop are all ethically sourced too – organic, sustainable, palm oil free and local wherever possible.

No I’m afraid there isn’t room inside Meadow Keeper’s Cottage for a travel cot.
I’m afraid not. As a nature reserve our landscape has free range deer and lots of wildlife so we don’t permit dogs no matter how well behaved they are promised to be.
No, at Swallowtail Hill we encourage you to take some time out of everyday life. To unplug in order to recharge! To stop the scroll for a while and really enjoy the time you spend here. So you won’t find Wi-Fi, or television, or cinema screens or anything like that here. We firmly believe this is what makes breaks here extra special, no distractions – just you, your loved ones, and some uninterrupted time to relax.
The compost loo is actually really efficient and easy to use. Everyone needs to sit down to use it as it works on a separation system (liquids stay separate from solids) so sitting down means everything automatically ends up in the right place! You just add sawdust if you’ve had a poo, and you can only put loo paper into the tank – all other rubbish must go in the bin provided. Little children might need assistance using it to make sure everything ends up where it should!
