Our Story

Swallowtail Hill’s story begins well over 30 years ago when we first started rewilding the landscape. Knowing we had something exceptional to share, we first welcomed guests back in 2010 and that was the start of something rather special…

Slowdown isn’t just a noun to us, it’s a verb, a vibe, a lifestyle.

We feel passionately about making sure that life isn’t passing you by in a never-ending to-do list and that you aren’t spending all of your time glued to your phone scrolling other people’s moments and memories rather than experiencing your own.

  • star ratingWe’ll be back! (again!!)  – We stayed at Swallowtail Hill in October for our 5th visit and as always had a fantastic time.
This time we stayed in the Woodcutters Cottage, this was actually the unit we stayed in on our first visit! So, it was nice to come back!
Sarah and her team always make the stay enjoyable!
The cottage was spotless and had everything we needed for our stay.
We all love being outdoors and the silence in the morning enjoying a cuppa is amazing! All you can hear is the wildlife!
My children love getting treats from the honesty shop, here you can get basic essentials if you’ve forgotten something and also change over your ice packs and portable lamp for charging.
Sarah is only a text away if you need her!

Swallowtail very quickly became one of our favourite places to take time out as a family and somewhere we enjoy visiting every year!
    We’ll be back again!

star ratingA perfect weekend getaway in the woods!  – Stayed here with my wife in October 2024. I don’t often leave reviews, but really felt compelled to as this was such a special trip. Our cabin (Woodcutter’s Cottage) was genuinely magical. It’s hidden away in the woods, but it has absolutely everything you need. The cottage is cosy and quiet, and the surrounding woods are beautiful. The hot tub is a real treat, especially at dawn! Sarah was such an amazing host – check in was easy, and she gave us all the information we needed to make the most of our stay.

This is genuinely one of the best and most enjoyable short breaks we’ve had. We felt like we were lost in our own private bit of woodland. Such a great way to switch off for the weekend with all the comforts that go with it! You won’t regret staying here!

star ratingWonderful, cosy, beautifully run!  – We had the world’s most gorgeous stay at the Woodcutter’s cabin. It was very private, and every amenity was so well thought through, the cabin itself was beautifully made, super cosy, clean and the hot tub was the perfect treat, and so fun to set up. Sarah was incredibly helpful and the gorgeous treats in the tuck shop were wonderful. Thank you so much for such a lovely stay, and we hope to come back soon to say hello to the Donkeys!

  • star ratingIncredible experience  – Incredible experience staying here with my wife and 3 year old son. We stayed in Long view. A cosy and comfortable cabin with everything you could need and an amazing view from the bedroom. The hot tub was brilliant and we loved cooking on and sitting by the fire pit. We went to the horse and cart in Peasmarsh for dinner on Friday which was great and then did the easy 10 mins drive to Rye on Saturday too. We felt both very welcomed and catered for throughout our stay and hope to return in the future.

star ratingReally relaxing place!  – What an amazing relaxing place, i really loved waking up there. Super peaceful and private. The hot tub was great, the firepit was all set up for us. The bed was comfy, and there were some really nice touches by the owner. We’ll definitely be coming to stay again.

star ratingA delightful stay in beautiful countryside  – We stayed with another family in Wood and Penfold cabins. Although off-grid (which was great!) the facilities are carefully thought through and you have everything you need. The setting is delightful, with plenty of space for children to explore independently. A beautiful location where you can truly get back to nature.

star ratingA great escape  – Swallowtail hill is a wonderful place to escape. We stayed in the Long View which had a beautiful view and a log fired hot tub. We watched rabbits, deer, dragonfly and bats and enjoyed marshmallows on the campfire.
Everything is well thought out, all you need to bring is food, but even that can be arranged if you ask in advance.
    We will be back.
